NEW 2016 KIA SPORTAGE - FIRST OFFICIAL IMAGES

Although we’ve not seen interior images yet, these initial pictures show a more dynamic design for the Nissan Qashqai rival, heavily inspired by the firm’s KX-3 concept that was first shown in China last year. It’s described as “bold and progressive”, and will sit alongside the redesigned Optima at Frankfurt.

The Sportage features a new version of Kia’s trademark ‘Tiger Nose’ front-end design, with a more prominent grille shape, a chrome surround and sleeker headlamps protruding from the bonnet sides. The windscreen is a bit more steeply raked, although the sloping side window is very similar to the old car’s.

The broader shoulderline gives it a more muscular look, while at the back a new chrome strip links the redesigned light clusters. A metallic rear skidplate also appears, and there’s liberal use of chrome for the exhausts, lower door trim and roof bars.

Kia claims the Sportage will receive its “most refined, highest-quality cabin to date”. Quality soft-touch materials and a classier design will feature, as will the latest array of infotainment, connectivity and active safety tech. Features such as leather sports seats and ambient lighting can also be seen in the cabin sketch.

It’s not clear if this new design will impact on practicality, as the current Sportage has one of the biggest boots in its class. Certainly the KX-3 concept was slightly shorter and narrower than today’s car, and the boot was 62 litres smaller.

In terms of engines we can expect the familiar range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains will feature. The option of front or four-wheel drive should still be offered, too.
